Hey all!

This past weekend (Saturday, September 28th to be exact) I had the distinct pleasure of returning to my hometown (area) to do a signing at Seann’s Anime & Comics in Sylvania, Ohio.

Seann (who, as the name implies, owns the place) has always been very generous about both stocking my comics, promoting them to his customers, and being an all-around awesome fellow.

In return, I organized a Northwest Ohio media blitz surrounding my appearance, including articles about the signing (and his shop) in two Toledo-based newspapers and even a (very rare) live interview on a local news station.

(I was hidden in shadow for the whole thing, of course!)

Signing at Seann’s is always a successful venture for me if for no other reason than that I get to see so many old friends who come out to visit, including one who I haven’t seen in 20 years.

20 years.

Let that sink in for a moment.

While it obviously became tougher to keep in touch with some people as they or I moved, I also stared losing touch with even more in direct proportion to how much I dedicated myself to my writing.

After all, you can’t write and socialize at the same time, you know?

After my buddy left, I took a moment to reflect on this… and then I took a moment to walk in front of my table and look at it… and this is what I saw:

Seann's (October 2013)

As you can see, there are 12 books on the table… and I have work in 11 of them.

(The one lone book I’m not a part of is THE LEGEND OF OZ: THE WICKED WEST #1… although you’ll notice that Seann’s was the recipient of advanced copies of THE LEGEND OF OZ: THE WICKED WEST #12, which is the first part of my four-issue arc on the series.)

20 years ago I dreamed about being in a position like this… and now I’m here.

There have been costs, of course… but… dang. 11 books and counting. That’s something.

The cherry on top (or, in my case, in the Shirley Temple) is that all the while I’m doing 13 signing appearances in 13 straight weeks.

Again… dang. That’s something.

This coming weekend (which is actually tomorrow as I write this) I’ll be appearing at CINEMA WASTELAND, a horror convention in Strongsville, Ohio (which is right outside of Cleveland).

I’m exhausted and haven’t packed yet and still have dreams of getting WRITE OR WRONG #79 written tonight… but… dang.

11 books. It’s a good start.

Thanks for joining me on this amazing adventure, my friends.

Your friend in comics,
Dirk Manning
