Hey all!

This last weekend marked my third yearly pilgrimage to the wonderful horror/grindhouse convention CINEMA WASTELAND in Strongsville, Ohio.

To say that CINEMA WASTELAND is “family show” would be a bit of a misnomer, as it’s not meant to be family friendly, per say… but it is unquestionably a show where the attendees and exhibitors alike — most of whom attend every time year after year — quickly become a family to each other.

Case in point:

Cinema Wasteland -- October 2013
That’s a picture of (going from left to right) Gonzo, Eddie, Me, Dahmer and Janet Decay (aka: “The Daughter of the Ghoul”) all hamming it up at my table on Day Two of Cinema Wasteland… and that motley crew is a large portion of my CINEMA WASTELAND family, along with my other friends like Scott, Bryon, Darlene and the like.

Everyone who does the con circuit — whether it be comic cons, horror cons, etc. — knows what it’s like to have your “con friends” who you only see at the shows.

Sometimes, though, you develop special bonds with special people — like fine folks.

Sometimes you have “con friends”… and sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll have a “con FAMILY” at certain shows.

I would have never have met Gonzo and his crew were it not for having the pleasure of setting-up next to them for the past two years (and hopefully counting), just as I would not have had the pleasure of knowing Scott (who, sadly, isn’t pictured here) would I not have had the pleasure of setting-up next to him and his sister my first year at the show.

However, I am glad all of these things have happened, because my life is richer for knowing them all.

Next stop: COMICS & MORE in Madison Heights, Michigan, where I’ll be doing a WRITE OR WRONG panel on writing for comics, tthe band VOYAG3R will be playing a set, and more. Join us!

Your friend in comics,
Dirk
